Free Assembly Plaid Coat
Free Assembly Plaid Coat | Classic Wool Blend Outerwear
We designed the Free Assembly plaid coat for those who appreciate classic menswear without the fuss. This coat features a wool-blend shell with a tonal plaid pattern that works equally well over a suit or your favorite denim. The tailored fit offers room through the shoulders while maintaining a clean silhouette, and the interior is fully lined for smooth layering.

The outer shell combines wool with synthetic fibers to balance warmth and durability. Pure wool offers excellent insulation, but our blend resists pilling and holds its shape through repeated wear. The polyester lining slides smoothly over layers, making it easy to slip the coat on over a blazer or cardigan.

Sizing and fit guidance
Our Free Assembly plaid coat follows a tailored fit profile. If you typically wear a medium in button-down shirts, order a medium here. The coat is cut to layer over a dress shirt and blazer without pulling at the chest or restricting arm movement.
Sleeve and shoulder dimensions
Sleeve length is set for wear over suit jackets, ending at the base of your thumb when arms hang naturally. Shoulder seams sit at the natural shoulder point rather than dropping for an oversized look. We recommend trying the coat with your thickest intended base layer to confirm comfort through the torso.

Styling and versatility
The tonal plaid pattern reads as solid from a distance but adds texture up close. This makes the coat adaptable to both formal and casual settings. Pair it with tailored trousers and oxfords for office commutes, or throw it over a henley and chinos for weekend errands.
The charcoal and grey colorway coordinates with navy, black, tan, and olive bottoms. We’ve seen customers wear this coat as their primary winter layer in milder climates and as a mid-layer under parkas in colder regions. The notch lapel and clean lines echo traditional peacoat styling without the bulk, and the same attention to construction that defines our jacket range carries through every stitch and seam here.

Questions about the Free Assembly plaid coat
No, this coat requires dry cleaning only. The wool blend and structured construction will shrink and lose shape if machine washed. For best results, have the coat professionally cleaned once or twice per season depending on wear frequency.
The plaid coat follows our tailored fit profile, similar to our blazers and structured jackets. It’s cut closer to the body than our relaxed-fit parkas but still allows room for layering a sweater or blazer underneath. If you own other Free Assembly tailored pieces, order your usual size.
The wool-blend shell performs best in temperatures between 35 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It blocks wind effectively and provides moderate insulation, making it ideal for fall and early spring. In colder climates, you can layer it under a heavier parka or wear it as a standalone piece in milder winter conditions.
The coat ships with a spare button set and a care card, but no belt or other accessories. It’s designed to be worn open or fastened at the two front buttons. A branded garment bag is included for storage.
The wool blend offers some water resistance for brief exposure to drizzle, but this coat is not waterproof. Heavy rain will soak through the fabric. For wet weather, we recommend layering a waterproof shell over the coat or choosing a different outerwear style designed for rain.
The Free Assembly plaid coat measures 34 inches from the top of the collar to the hem. On most wearers, this hits mid-thigh and provides coverage without dragging. Sleeve length is designed to end at the base of your thumb when arms hang naturally at your sides.
The coat has two exterior welt pockets at hip level and one interior chest pocket. All pockets are fully functional. The welt pockets are deep enough to hold a smartphone, wallet, or keys, and the interior pocket is sized for a passport or small notebook.
